The children started the week by learning about features of writing that are use to write a good diary entry. They were then set the task of finding these features in diary entries before planning and writing their own diary entry as Samson the mouse on board RMS Titanic.
Science - Forces
This week we started our new science topic on forces. The children had a great time exploring how "old" toys used different types of force - pushing, pulling, squeezing - to make them work.
The Titanic Museum
On Thursday the children had a great time at Southampton's Seacity Museum. The guide was really impressed with how much the children knew and could remember about the Titanic. The children got the opportunity to perform an experiment to discover how the Titanic actually sank, looked at replica artefacts from the Titanic and tried to work out their uses, had the impossible job of deciding who was going to be given a place on a lifeboat, and matched pictures and smells to different areas on board the Titanic. We learnt about key individuals and their stories and got first hand experience of being on the bridge and steering as well as being a "fireman" and fuelling the boilers with coal.
PE - Games - Hitting
This week the children were developing their sending and receiving skills by hitting a ball using a racket. The children revisited bouncing the ball on a racket as well as bouncing it down on the ground - keeping tension in the arm and maintaining control of the ball. We then moved on to hitting the ball with our hands and the importance of positioning and angling our arms to send as well as being on the balls of our feet to position ourselves correctly to receive.
Week 2
History - Sequencing the events of RMS Titanic
This week the children shared what they already knew about the RMS Titanic and learnt when it was built and sailed in relation to other historical events they have learnt over the last couple of years. The children listened to the events that led to RMS Titanic and helped order them correctly before sequencing the events in their books.
Internet Safety - Online bullying
This half term we are developing our knowledge and understanding of online bullying and its effects. This week we looked at a variety of different scenarios and explored the different emotions people felt both as a victim and a perpetrator of bully and possible reasons behind why they felt these different emotions.
English - Personal opinions and past tense
For our writing journey this week we started off with some oracy work to explore our own opinions about RMS Titanic in relation to thinking about whether she was the "ship of dreams" or the "ship of nightmares." The children worked in pairs to sort different facts that supported both headings and then shared their thoughts with each other before completing a continuum line. In preparation of writing their own diaries, we also explored the correct use of past tense by adding the suffix -ed and irregular verbs that have their own past tense words into sentences to write about the past.
Maths - Using known facts
This week we explored the question - "if I know this, what else do I know?" The children explored solving problems using "facts for free", equivalent facts and number bonds, nearby facts and place value facts.
Gymnastics - Continuous movement - rolls and tucks
This week in gymnastics the children applied their knowledge of tension, rolls and tucks to explore continuous movement by exploring how to manipulate their bodies to move through the different transitions. The children competed against each to keep a continuous movement going through tucking, spinning and rolling before using apparatus and exploring different ways to travel across them continuously.
World Book Day
We had a great day celebrating World Book day on Thursday. The children looked fantastic and it was lovely seeing the school full with people enjoying the love of reading. The children took part in celebrating the publishers Puffin's 85th birthday by joining the story maker show. We learnt how to create our own guide to moods with Nadia Shireen, creator of Barbara’s Very Useful Guide to Moods and joined in with a
Draw-a-long with Nadia as she showed us how to create our own Guide to Moods.
Week 1
Science - Longitudinal Study
As part of our on going study of our field, we looked back at photos we had taken in September and discussed evidence of habitats, food, and living things. We then went down to the field and observed the seasonal changes of winter moving into spring and evidence of new life.
History - Boarding the Titanic
To start our topic, the children were told they had to imagine they were going on holiday by boat. Not by any boat, but by the largest most magnificent boat of all time. The children were issued tickets and quickly realised they were different - some were first class, some were second class and finally third class. The children were then treated accordingly by their class by the ship staff as they would have done back in 1912. Once all children had "boarded", they then shared want they already knew about RMS Titanic.
English - Samson's Titanic Journey
At the start of the week, we started our new writing journey - Samson's Titanic journey. The children revisited writing questions, when the book's front cover was slowly revealed to help them make predictions about what the story was about. The children then developed their sequencing with the use of time connectives before exploring how the author uses adjectives to create detailed and interesting descriptions which the children then used in their own writing.
Computing - Word processing - Word Art
This half term the children will be developing their typing and word processing skills by creating their own fact files. This week the children explored how their names can be altered through changing font styles, font size, colour, and the use of word art. The children also explored different ways of writing their name using pencil and paper to.
Art - Milliners
This week we started our new art topic by exploring the work of three famous Milliners - Phillip Treacy, Stephen Jones, and Eugenia Kim. The children shared their views on likes and dislikes of the different hat designs based on material texture, patterns, size, and colour.
PE - Inventing games
This week the children continued to develop their ball skills through reviewing sending and receiving using their arms, hands, legs, and feet. The children then explored using the chest pass to send the ball to their opponent via a bounced pass, in the air pass or a direct pass. The children then applied these skills by creating their own versions of the "piggy in the middle" game.
