Week 1
It’s great to be back after the Easter holidays, particularly now that the weather is starting to look a bit brighter. We had lots of fun being with our friends this week. We played doctors together and had a great time bandaging each other up!
We’ve also been busy making dens for weary travellers. Some of our dens were small enough for tiny minibeasts, whilst others were human-sized!
In maths we’ve been practising counting up to and beyond 20. We spotted the pattern the numbers follow as we count higher and higher, noticing that the digits 0-9 are repeated over and over again. We collected sets of 20 objects, using a number track to help us keep count. At the end of the week we really enjoyed playing a game called Race to 20 with our friends.
This half term we’re going to be learning about different types of transport. We began our learning this week by talking about ‘the past’. We created a timeline of key events in our lives, such as being born and starting school. We noticed that some events happened a very long time ago, whilst others happened recently. Then we looked at photographs of transport and realised that lots of vehicles have changed over time.
Our main focus for transport this week was boats. We investigated different materials to see which ones would make the best boat, then tested them in water. Some of us even made boats in the woodwork area.
We also enjoyed playing with aeroplanes. We wrote secret messages and then flew them to each other across the classroom!
In phonics, we read words with tricky blends at the end, like tent, lump, soft and help. Even though these words are short, the nt, mp, ft and lp blends are hard to hear and say. We’ll be practising reading and writing words like these every day this half term.
In Drawing Club, we read the book Penguin. It’s a very funny story about a silent penguin, a cheeky boy and a hungry lion! We drew the lion and a hiding place and wrote about how we could rescue the penguin from the lion’s tummy.
It’s been a great start to a new term!
