Week 4

Gymnastics

We had lots of time exploring curled, wide and narrow shapes on the apparatus this week. The children also moved in narrow and wide shapes.

Adventure time!

The children had lots of adventure time fun this week and really enjoyed making a squid where they practised their attaching skills. They used staples, sellotape, glue and paper clips to attach the tentacles to the squid body.

Maths

We were very busy in our maths lessons this week. We started the week comparing and making numbers, we then moved on to solving a problem about pencils in a pot. The children knew that there were 3 pencils in the pot with the ‘least’ and 8 pencils in the pot with the ‘most’, so the children had to think about how many pencils could go in the middle pot. They used pencils and pots to help find their answers and then they explained to me how they knew their answer was correct. After this, we practised using time vocabulary to order events in a day and we finished the week partitioning numbers to 5 into a cherry model. The children were taught about having a systematic approach, in order to find all the possibilities.

Outdoor Games

During our games lesson this week, we practised balancing a ball on our bat and walking around the playground with it, trying not to let it roll off! The Turtle class did a great job! We then practised passing and receiving the ball by pushing it with our bats and rolling it to our partner. The children then practised stopping the ball by placing their bat on top of it.

Week 3

Drawing Club

Science

In science this week, we identified animals and classified them by what they eat. The children then cut out each animal and placed it in one of the tree hoops: Carnivores, herbivores or omnivores! We were surprised about what some of the animal ate!

Games

We started our lesson this week with a warm up game of stuck in the mud. We then did some jumping on and around our skipping ropes. Today we focussed on practising our bat and ball control. The children dribbled the ball around the skipping ropes on the playground and walked around the playground balancing the ball on their bats. They had really good control of their tennis balls.

Geography

This week in our Geography lesson, we learnt about the human features (things made by humans) and physical features (things that are naturally occurring) in Catherington. The children sorted photographs taken from around the village and sorted them as physical or human geography. They did really well. 😀

Design and Technology

The Turtle class loved their DT lesson this week. We focussed on fastening paper to card and tested three different options from the choice of: sellotape, staples, glue or a paperclip. Lots of children had a go at using a paperclip even though it was challenging.

Gymnastics

In gymnastics this week, we created curled shapes. The Turtles then created a routine with their partner which saw them combine a high curled shape, a wide movement, then a low curled shape and a narrow movement. They then performed their routine with their partner to half the class. The ‘audience’ then gave feedback to those who had performed and praised their shape choices, their strong muscles and their team work. 🌟🌟🌟

Maths

In maths we have been ordering numbers. We have ordered number cards and added numbers to a number line. We then built numbers to 30 with Numicon or Unifix showing how many tens and ones each number had. Later in the week, we compared three numbers and proved that they were ordered correctly using the resources.

Week 2

Adventure Time!

Computing

This week in computing, the children learnt the definition of ‘technology’ as something that helps us and that’s made by humans. They practised using their new found knowledge by sorting images under the headings ‘technology’ and ‘not technology’. As I walked around the room, the children explained their choices.

Science - Longitudinal Study

To start our year of Science, the children began their longitudinal study. Over the year, they will observe weather changes and changes to the environment around our school.

This week, Sammy the snail wrote to Turtle class, asking if they could help him find a new home at our school. Before he makes the big move over, he explained that he wants the children to find out about how the environment at school changes over a year, the animals he could make fiends with that live around our school and what the weather is like at different times of the year.

We then went down to the field and looked for signs of Autumn that we can already see. We saw leaves on the ground, golden and yellow in colour, we saw leaves on the trees changing colour and we found fallen apples squashed into the grass. The children were also delighted to find some little creatures. They found several slugs, some spiders and some woodlice! We had quite the afternoon adventure.

Games

Games was really good fun. We warmed up with a game of stuck in the mud which the children loved and then we practised jumping over skipping ropes in different ways. Our lesson was all about working on our our ball skills. The children dribbled different sized balls with their hands first and then their feet around the playground and in and out of obstacles. They then used bats to manoeuvre the balls around the playground and we even tried a relay! They all worked very hard!

Maths

In maths this week, we have been finding one more and one less than a number and we even solved some word problems. The children are very good at explaining their understanding.

Design Technology

The children were very excited to start their DT project this week of making a class moving book all about local animals. This week we started by practising our cutting skills through a few fun activities. The children loved cutting and sticking their fox in place!

PE - Gymnastics

Gymnastics this week was very successful - Turtle class are wonderful at listening and following instructions and produced amazing work both at floor level and on the apparatus! This week, we were making wide shapes on different levels and trying to make sure our muscles were all very strong to hold our positions really still. Lots of children really tried to point their toes and be extra stretchy to make their shapes look amazing.

Week 1

Adventure Time!

Maths

In maths this week, we focussed on what numbers look like both by representing them using maths manipulatives such as plastic people and golden, pirate coins and as numerals considering the shapes of the numbers and how we write them down. They also saw numbers represented as in pictures.

PE - Gymnastics

Turtles class are amazing! We went into the hall for gymnastics this week and they were really hard working and beautifully behaved. We focussed on narrow shapes today and tried to make them on different levels and on the apparatus.
