The children at Catherington Church of England Infant school have recently been working on a very exciting and special art project. Crissy Hodginkson, the head teacher, commissioned a local artist Philippa Adams to design and make a large mosaic cross to hang outside on the wall of the school.
Once a design had been finalised, workshops were led in the school with Philippa and Teresa Negus (another local artist) where all the children were able to take part. The pupils worked in small groups to carefully lay mosaic tiles on the cross creating a colourful pattern with the school’s Christian value statements included in the design. The way in which the children worked was amazing considering their young age. They were completely engaged and so excited about the cross they were creating together.
A group of year one pupils were taken to All Saints church where they made drawings of patterns and shapes from the stained glass windows, floors and other decorated items in the church and churchyard. These drawings were used to create a central design for the mosaic.
It was a real pleasure to work with such an enthusiastic and well behaved group of youngsters. Their obvious pride and the way they engaged with the project truly reflected the Christian values written on the cross and the ethos of the happy school in which it will be placed.
