Autumn 1 2021

Turtle Class Biscuit Bears!

Music

This half term in music we have been learning about pitch. We have played high, low and middle sounds on percussion instruments. After reading Goldilocks and the three bears we matched the bears to the different sounds we heard in the story. We practised on chime bars and then moved on to choosing and playing our own instruments 🥁🎹🎼

Science: Animals and Humans

This half term, we have been learning about animals and humans. We have named parts of the body and studied the different senses. We have also learnt about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We decided to study snails to see which category they belonged too and we found out they were omnivores! 🐌

Maths - Money, height and length

In maths, we have been learning about money! We have been looking closely at the value of the coins, sorting them by the way they look including their size and colour and we have been adding 1p and 10p coins the find total amounts of money.

We also used blocks to compare the length and height of ourselves and objects from around the classroom.

Art - Teddy Bears

In art, we have been using teddy bears as our inspiration. The children have been using different mediums including different types of pencil and paint applied using different tools from around the classroom, to create images of bears. They have worked really hard to create the texture of fur using these different tools with paint and patterns with pencil. The Turtle class have created some wonderful art to be very proud of.

Writing - Biscuit Bear

Last week, we started our new writing learning journey using the book, ‘Biscuit Bear’ by Mini Gray. The children started their learning journey talking about what they thought the book would be about using the clues they were given in the form of images relating to the book. They were convinced their new book was the Gingerbread Man, so we’re super excited to learn that it was something new. The children have been very excited about this new story and have discussed their favourite parts and started to think about the biscuit bear character and words to describe him. During this learning journey, the children will be learning about imperative verbs (bossy verbs for writing instructions), describing words and revisiting time words too. They will also be thinking carefully about the order in which instructions must be completed and whether this will affect the final outcome.

Computing

In computing over the last few weeks, the children have been learning about the different parts of a desktop and laptop computer. They have also been practising using the track pad on a laptop to complete several tasks including: piecing puzzles together on the screen to complete a picture, drawing an image of their own face using a painting programme called Paintz and also typing their name underneath using the keyboard! They have done an excellent job!

Writing - Dogger

In writing, the children have been using the story of ‘Dogger’ by Shirley Hughes to inspire their writing of a recount of events that saw Dave lose his precious cuddly dog Dogger and then after much searching and the kindness of his sister, Dave and Dogger were reunited again. During this writing learning journey, the children used drama to get to know the story, they practised using time words to order the events, they use capital letters to write names and to start sentences and they used full stops to complete sentences.

Adventure Time

The children have been very busy completing their challenges during Adventure Time. Here are some photographs of the Turtles in action!

Welcome back Turtles 🐢❤️

English

This week we have introduced our new book: Can I build another me?
The children have discussed what makes them special, labelled their features and wrote some incredible sentences too! We have also been focusing on capital letters and full stops.

Maths

We have been ordering numbers to 20 this week using practical resources. The children have also been practising their counting and making sure they count reliably! We have introduced the more than, less than and equals signs and they have worked so hard! Well done 👍

The Turtles have also recapped some sounds, read every day, studied the Catherington wheel, surveyed the weather and discussed who they think made the world! What a busy week!

We hope they have enjoyed their first week back, we certainly did! ⭐️
